How to Safely Reset a Tripped Circuit Breaker

A tripped circuit breaker is doing its job — cutting power before a wire overheats or a short causes a fire. Resetting one is safe and quick, as long as you follow a few precautions.
1. Find the panel and identify the tripped breaker
Open your electrical panel and look for a switch that sits in the middle, between "ON" and "OFF," rather than fully in either position.
2. Unplug or turn off what was running on that circuit
Before resetting, turn off or unplug the devices that were running when the power went out. This avoids an immediate re-trip and protects sensitive electronics from a power surge when the circuit comes back on.
3. Reset the breaker
Push the breaker firmly to the full "OFF" position first, then back to "ON." You should feel and hear a firm click.
4. Turn devices back on one at a time
Bring load back gradually so you can identify which device, if any, caused the overload.
Safety notes
- Never touch the breaker with wet hands, and stand to the side of the panel rather than directly in front of it when resetting.
- If a breaker trips immediately again, or if you smell burning or see scorch marks, stop and call a licensed electrician — this points to a short circuit or wiring fault, not a simple overload.
- A breaker that trips repeatedly on the same circuit, even under normal load, usually means the breaker itself is failing and needs replacement.
